A day after being thrown out of the Oval Office by President Trump, CNN White House correspondent (and possibly the biggest contributor to CNN’s whopping four wins at last night’s ‘Fake News Awards’) hit back at the president during an event at the Washington DC-based Newseum.
After being asked about CNN’s banner performance at the Fake News Awards, Acosta tried to turn the notorious epithet back on the president by proclaiming him “The King of Fake News.”
“Having been called fake news myself…
I can say: “The president is the king of fake news.”
Acosta then listed several of Trump’s most memorable falsehoods, including his advocacy of the Obama birther movement and his claims that he lost the popular vote due to widespread voter fraud (though, to be sure, there are more documented incidences of voter fraud than the media would like to admit). Acosta insisted that Trump’s tendency to lie is “just a fact.”
“I don’t want people to think I’m saying this because I have an axe to grind…it’s just a fact.
We’ve been saying there’s an apple and there’s a banana. We’re sticking with Apples, They’ve been throwing out a lot of bananas.
“It’s unfortunate that the president has sunk to that level where he has to go around issuing these kinds of awards,” Acosta said.
“It’s just not what you would think would happen in this country.”
As a counter-event to Trump’s Fake News Awards, the Washington DC-based Newseum presented the “Press Oppressor Awards,” giving Trump the “Overall Achievement in Undermining Global Press Freedom.”
Earlier this week, Trump ordered Acosta out of the Oval Office when he tried to ask questions connected to the president’s recent reported remarks about “shithole countries.”
